Edward D Barlow

BiographyLithographer, printer, architect, surveyor and entrepreneur arrived in Sydney from London aboard the LORD GODERICH on 30 August 1836. He established himself in George Street as a decorator, before moving to 9 Bridge Street in June 1937 where he advertised black silhouette profile portraits. In September 1837 he took over Sydney's 'Original Zincographic Printing Establishment' and was offering profile portraits, architectural drawings and plans of estates.

The business flourished and Barlow took on additional lithographers and draughtsmen to assist him. In May 1838, Barlow opened The Domestic Bazaar, an agency for savants at the Colonnade ship in Bridge Street and stated to call his business the 'Repository of Arts'.

In October 1840, Barlow returned to London and the business, now manages by William Nicholas was sold to a William Baker. Barlow returned to Sydney in late 1842 but the death of his son and a very public divorce affected him badly.
