Private in the 4th infantry Battalion, Naval and Miltary Forces, Special Tropical Corps. Enlisted 20 July 1915, embarked 20 November 1915, in Sydney, on HMAT TE ANAU. He had been a divinity student. He was aged 24. His father was the Rev. James Balfour Penman, Methodist Parsonage, Katoomba, N.S.W. His mother was Vida; father died October 1931, mother February 1950. Brothers Roy and Horace; sister Gladys.

Penman married Alice Oldham in 1920; Nancy was born in 1921 and George in 1925.
