James Imray

BiographyJames Imray entered the chart publishing business in 1835, taking over the operations of Robert and William Blachford with a partner Michael Blachford. Imray had been apprenticed in 1818 to a stationary company but appeared to have favoured a career in charts.

In February 1843 Imray was declared bankrupt yet managed to buy out his partner Blachford in 1846 and taking leadership of the business. He was hugely successful in this and at one stage was known as the “the leading private chart publisher of the day”.

This publishing house continues to operate today under the name of Imray, Laurie, Norie and Wilson.
