BiographyAnnette Mathilda Wilhelmina Lewis travelled from Sydney to Newcastle on Tyne in 1907 via Canada. On the first leg of the journey, Sydney to Singapore on the SS GUTHRIE, she met Martin MacGilivray who was second engineer of that ship. She then travelled on the Canadian Pacific Railway Company ships the EMPRESS OF CHINA, to Vancouver, and the EMPRESS OF IRELAND to the United Kingdom. Annette was back in Sydney in 1908 and continued her relationship with Martin MacGilivray, marrying him in 1909 in Waterloo, Sydney. They had a daughter Olivena [Olivene] in the same year.

Annette MacGilivray died of breast cancer in 1916 and Olivene was raised by Annette's sisters. Olivene married Gordon J. McLean in 1934. The donor of the collection, Donald Mclean, is their son. Martin MacGilivray died in 1938.
