Johann Heinrich Ramburg

BiographyJohann Ramburg was a German painter and printmaker who had the fortune of an introduction to King George III at a young age. It is said Ramburg made "many humorous sketches and caricatures" that impressed the king who encouraged him to move to London with royal support. He went on to study with Benjamin West at the Royal Academy Schools and in 1784 was awarded a silver medal for his life drawing.

In 1792 on a return to Hanover Ramburg was appointed electoral court painter. He painted many notable figures including portraits of members of the British royal family and illustrated a number of publications. Ramburg went on to become one of the most well known illustrators in Germany.
