Rear-Admiral Sir John Franklin KCH FRGS RN was a British Royal Navy officer and explorer of the Arctic. He was Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land from 1837 to 1843. He made three atempts to find the North-West passage. The died on his final attempt.
