Peter MacKenzie

Peter Mackenzie (1799-1875) was a journalist, publisher and lawyer.

While a trained lawyer Mackenzie was also a journalist as it was noted that the quiet life of the law did not suit him and his political beliefs. He established The Loyal Reformers' Gazette in 1831 which published Mackenzie’s political opinions - focusing on the need for parliamentary reform and general views on the social life of Glasgow.

Mackenzie did not shy away from commentaries or accounts that might be seen as inflammatory and over the course of time became known as 'Loyal Peter' in response to his ardent support of his political causes. He spent time in a Glasgow prison and became a well-known Glasgow personality.
