Vi Campbell

BiographyBorn in Devonport, Tasmania, Vi began her artist career as a fashion illustrator at a magazine in Sydney where she illustrated patterns for clothing. After being fired by asking for more pay, Vi became a freelancer and shared a studio with other artists in Jameson Street. One of these artists was involved in the New Theatre, a theatre producing politically left-wing plays. Vi began attending and soon became involved in the Waterside Workers Art Group. The group held weekly art classes where Rod Shaw taught and other artists such as Sonny Glynn, Harry McDonald and Pat Graham attended.

Vi discussed ideas with Rod Shaw and other artists about the Wharfies Mural and drew up some concepts herself, although she did not recall if any of her's ever got "up onto the wall". She became involved in conducting children's art classes each Saturday at the Waterside Worker's offices in Sydney with Clem Millward and Nan Hortin.
