Sidney Simon

American, 1917 - 1997
BiographySidney Simon was an official American war artist during WWII.
Simon initially trained as an artist at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and The Barnes Foundation. After enlisting in the army he was assigned as head of Morale Division and then posted to the South Pacific under the command of General McArthur. Simon spent time in the Philippines, New Guinea and Australia and recorded the signing of surrender by Japan aboard the USS MISSOURI in 1945.

After WWII Simon continued as an artist, establishing Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine which still acts as an artist residency.
