Nike

BiographyNike was founded in January 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS) by track athlete Philip Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman. The company officially became Nike, Inc in 1978.

1966, BRS opened its first retail store in Santa Monica, California and by 1971 was preparing to launch its own line of footwear, which would bear the now famous Swoosh logo designed Swoosh logo by Carolyn Davidson. The Swoosh was first used by Nike in June 1971, and was registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on January 22, 1974.

The first shoe to carry this design was called Nike and was released to the public in the summer of 1971. In February 1972, BRS introduced its first line of Nike shoes, named after the Greek goddess of victory. The sponsorship of athletes became a key marketing tool for the rapidly growing company. The company continues to manufacture sports apparel, equipment and accessories.
