BiographyWilliam Pierce Stubbs was born in 1842 at Orrington, Maine. His father was a shipmaster and William was likely a master of one of his ships during 1863-73. Stubbs' is believed to have produced his first ship portrait in 1871 and just five years later was working as a marine artist in the Boston region, sharing a studio with fellow artist Wesley Webber.
