Walter Thomas trained as a naval architect and later became a chief artist for a Liverpool printer. He was closely associated with the Blue Funnel Line, executing paintings in both oils and watercolours for the company's publicity material. His art work was distinctive in the accuracy of his ship portraits and attention to detail.

He also did commission work for the Cunard White Star Line and received acclaim for both his posters and postcards. In the 1950s when he moved from Liverpool to live in the Isle of Man he became a freelance artist again undertaking commission work for the Cunard Line.
