John Scott (1802-1885)

BiographyJohn Scott was born in South Shields, a coastal town in South Tyneside. He became a dedicated marine and landscape painter recording the many vessel types that frequented the town’s ports. He remained in the area his whole life and most of his paintings feature regional landscapes in the background.
In addition to his maritime paintings, Scott was also a proficient ship model maker and in 1851was awarded a medal from the Great Exhibition held in London.

Scott continued to paint throughout his life and died at his daughter’s home in South Shields at the age of 83. .
