Edward (William) Esdaille founded the company in 1891 as E Esdaile Optician at 11 Hunter Street, Sydney. He established the brand name for the firm "Sirius" and started making and selling scientific instruments. In 1920 his sons formally joined him in partnership the company being renamed E Esdaile & Sons, scientific and nautical instrument makers, with new premises at 42 Hunter Street. During World War II, the firm played a significant role in the war effort in supplying surveying equipment, ships’ compasses and small instruments for guns. E Esdaile & Sons became a public company in July 1948 following the death of the founder, William Edward Esdaile. It became E Esdaile & Sons Pty Ltd in 1953
