Lofty Bardayal Nadjamerrek was born in Central Australia in 1926. He is a senior member of the Mok clan, and his country is the ‘Stone country’ around the Upper Mann and Liverpool rivers, though he has travelled widely throughout Western Arnhem Land and has lived with his wife Mary near Oenpelli. During the 1990s Bardayal returned to his original country, residing in Kabulwarnamo in Western Arnhem Land.
In 1982 Bardayal was commissioned to do a painting which appeared on the Australian 40 cent stamp, and in 1998 he won the Telstra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders award for best work on paper. Bardayal’s work is held in numerous public and private collections in Australia and overseas including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Australian Museum of Sydney, National Australian Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Holmes a Court Collection and various University collections.
He died in 2009.
