Artist Info
Charles DixonBritish, 1872 - 1934

Charles Dixon was born in Goring, England, the son of genre painter Alfred Dixon. He was a painter in oils, watercolours, and pen and ink of marine subjects. Dixon's watercolour works tended to be ocean views and coastal scenes while his larger oil paintings documented contemporary events at sea. His watercolours of Thames estuary scenes with steam and sail were particularly admired, and he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and the New Watercolour Society. Dixon also worked as an illustrator for the 'Illustrated London News', 'Sphere' and the 'Graphic'. Although once neglected as a serious artist, he is now acclaimed as an outstanding 20th century artist, particularly in watercolour. Three major exhibitions of Dixon's work in 1973 helped reclaim his status as an artist. A keen yachtsman, Dixon lived at Itchenor on the Sussex coast and died on 12 September 1934.
