BiographyLittle is known about John Watt, other than his enthusiasm for ships. He was a member of numerous historical societies, and in 1954 was secretary of the Newcastle ship lover's society.

John Watt's father was a sea captain who worked in the Australian coastal trade and assembled most of the photographs in the collection. John Watt lived in Newcastle, New South Wales for most of his life and died at the age of 75.


This collection comprised of ship photographs, and miscellaneous paper based material including drawings and paintings which providing an insight into maritime art. The collection was donated by the rector of the Anglican parish of Maclean, Mr George W Markotsis, who was executor of John Watt's estate.
