Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg RA1740 - 1812

Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg was a painter and stage designer born in France in 1740. He achieved success in France with his romantic landscape and depictions of biblical subjects, even being chosen as peintre du roi (royal painter). Loutherbourg migrated to London, England in 1771 leaving his family and at times renouncing his French nationality. He worked in theatres creating stage design and backdrops for plays, initially in Drury Lane then Leicester Square and the Strand.
