DescriptionThis pair of Speedo Aquablade Swedish racing goggles feature a latex head strap, a patented leak proof gasket and anti-fog impregnated metallic coated lenses. The smoke coloured lenses reduce light transmission to the eye, lowering overall brightness without excessive colour distortion.HistoryGoggles have been used by swimmers since the mid 20th century. They were developed to protect the eyes from irritants found in pool or sea water, as well as increase the swimmer's vision underwater. Early designs caused safety concerns as they were often made of glass, which chipped easily and created splinters. Goggles with no gaskets are commonly known as Swedish goggles. They are generally sold in pieces so that the swimmer can make them up to their specific requirements. Other goggle types have a hard rubber, foam or silicone gasket, which forms a seal between the lens and the skin. Goggles and swimming caps formed part of Speedo's Aquablade range, produced to compliment the new technology incorporated into the swimsuit designs. SignificanceThese self assembly, adjustable goggles were worn by Australian Olympian Petria Thomas. They are an important example of the technological developments in swimwear and accessories made by Speedo during the 1990s.
