HistoryThe summer, winter and working uniforms in this collection display the embroidered category badge of Underwater Control (UC) specialists, trained to detect and identify all types of underwater sounds using sonar equipment and to understand the types and uses of anti-submarine and anti-ship weapons. The badge features two crossed torpedoes set against a harpoon attached to a coiled rope, and is a composite of the badges worn in the 1940s by Torpedo Electricians and Submarine Detectors. In 1996, when Underwater Controllers took on the new title of Acoustic Warfare Analysts (AWA), they opted to retain the composite category badge as a link with their predecessors and with the development of underwater warfare. This donation contains a collection of summer and winter UC and AWA category badges demonstrating the development of this specialisation in the Submarine Arm, as well as Able Seaman rank badges and epaulettes, Australia flashes and a dolphin badge.
