DescriptionA Kings Cup Regatta Souvenir Programme, 6 May 1933. Information contained within includes greetings to the rowing public in Australia, office bearers, regatta officials, hardy invitation eight-oar race, plan of course, etc. The event was held in Quensland on the Derwent River an a 2 1/2 mile course. New South Wales won the event with Queensland a close second. History"Since 1921 the crews have competed for the King's Cup. The trophy had been won by a First Australian Imperial Force crew at the Royal Peace Regatta held in London in 1919 following the cessation of hostilities at the end of World War I and was presented to the victorious eight-oared boat by King George V. In time, and in against dogged resistance from the Australian War Memorial, the Victorian Rowing Association petitioned the King to express his intention for the Cup, and at his command it became the perennial trophy to be presented to the winning state representative men's eight at the annual Australian Rowing Championships."SignificanceRowing regattas were immensely popular during the 19th Century. It was a spectacle open to everyone, suited Australia's growing love of the outdoors and their particular reverence for sporting competitions from "home".
