DescriptionA blueprint of TSS MOURILYAN by Alex Stephen & Sons Ltd shipbuilders and engineers Glasgow. Plan No. 246 dated 14 July 1908 titled 'TSS MOURILYAN capacity plan'. Scale 1/16 inch = 1 foot.HistoryTSS MOURILYAN was built by Alexander Stephen & Sons of Glasgow in 1928. The twin screw steamship was to run a feeder passenger service from Townsville to the northern Queensland ports. But MOURILYAN was found to be of too deep a draught for some of the river ports to which she was meant to run. She was chartered to AUSN to operate their Townsville/Cairns feeder service to that Company's main route from Townsville to Melbourne. MOURILYAN then operated from Melbourne to Warnambool and variously in Queensland before being sold to the Northern Steamship Co. of New Zealand. It was renamed MATANGI before being sold to the Anchor Line in 1929. MOURILYAN / MATANGI ceased service in 1950 and broken up.SignificanceThe TSS MOURILYAN was a hardworking coastal steamer operating in Australia and later New Zealand connecting regional ports and towns.
