DescriptionCartoon by Ron Tandberg published in the Sydney Morning Herald on 3 September, 2001. The single square depicts Australian Prime Minister John Howard standing alongside a man (possibly Captain Arne Rinnan of the vessel TAMPA) saying "It's illegal to fish in Australian waters."
SignificanceThis cartoon by Ron Tandberg depicts the way a contentious event was represented in the mass media. Along with many other cartoonists at the time, Tandberg attempted to defuse the panic that was generated by the government over the idea of illegal immigrants of 'invading' Australia. Advocating for welcoming asylum seekers as fellow humans in need of help and not as a political issue.
