DescriptionTitled Bra Boys 'Local Pride', this surfboard was painted by artist James Dodd for the 2004 Hang 12 auction, organised by the Clean Ocean Foundation. The surfboard is painted with bold, blue tattoo-like designs on both sides. A sword-like Southern Cross, great white sharks and the slogan 'Local Pride' decorate the front of the board. '2035', the Maroubra postcode, appears on the back.HistorySurfboards painted by twelve Australian artists were commissioned by the Clean Ocean Foundation Inc as part of the Hang 12 auction, aimed at highlighting ocean-related environmental issues.
The surfboard features an interpretation of iconography from the identifying tattoos of the Bra Boys. The Bra Boys are a 'surfing gang' from the Sydney beachside suburb of Maroubra. The choice of subject reflects Dodd's interest in the more positive aspects of one of the darker subcultures of Australia.
Dodd explores brands, stereotypes and identity, as well as the myth and legend of the Bra Boys. Of the surfboard Dodd writes 'I like to make images which help us discuss our contemporary Australian identity and particularly to examine established stereotypes... I like to remind people of the supportive environment the Bra Boys provided for many young men who may otherwise have nothing'.SignificanceThe board is an important document of an artist's response to Australian surfing culture. It represents a contemporary interpretation of a surfing subculture by evoking the iconography of the Bra Boys.
