DescriptionStipple engraving of Sir Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth (1757-1833). The Sir Edward Pellew Group of Islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria were named after him by Matthew Flinders in 1802. Other Australian features named in his honour include Cape Pellew and Exmouth Gulf.HistoryEdward Pellew (1757-1833) entered the Royal Navy in 1770 and rose steadily through the naval ranks until appointed Vice Admiral in 1832. He was noted for his outstanding personal courage and tactical brilliance during battle. John Chapman was a renowned stipple engraver of the late 18th century and was active from 1787 to 1811. Little else is known of his life.SignificanceThis engraving puts a face to a number of geographical locations in Australian which were named in his honour. Sir Edward Pellew (Viscount Exmouth) was highly regarded in the British Royal Navy in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was Matthew Flinders who named three localities after him during Flinders' 1801-1803 circumnavigation of Australia - Sir Edward Pellew Group of Islands, Cape Pellew, Exmouth Gulf.
