DescriptionThis photograph depicts a view from Rose Bay to Point Piper in Sydney, New South Wales. The barque in the centre is possibly HMAS TINGIRA. It is possible this photograph was taken from Tivoli estate at Rose Bay, which is now Kambala Girls School.HistoryTINGIRA was built in Scotland in 1886 as the passenger clipper SOBRAON. Purchased by the NSW State Government in 1891 and moved to Sydney the ship became a reformatory for boys, training them for a maritime career. The Australian Federal Government purchased the ship for the new Royal Australian Navy in 1911 and the vessel was commissioned as HMAS TINGIRA. TINGIRA was used by the RAN as a training ship and was decommissioned in 1927.SignificanceThe Samuel J Hood photographic collection records an extensive range of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour, including sail and steam ships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities from the 1890s through to the 1950s. They are also highly competent artistic studies and views - Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism. Hood’s maritime photographs are one of the most significant collections of such work in Australia.
