DescriptionFirst edition of Narrative of the Adventures and Suffering of Samuel Patterson, experienced in the Pacific Ocean, and many other parts of the World, with an account of the Feegee and Sandwich Islands.SignificanceThis volume is a rare and early Pacific narrative with important material on Hawaii and Fiji as well as Patterson's 1808 visit to Port Jackson. Patterson landed in Port Jackson at a time when few Americans visited Australia. The intimacy of the world at this period is remarkable as shown by one account detailed by the author. When he was in Sydney he recounts, " there came a young man on deck, and enquired if there were any Americans on board..... he lived in the neighbourhood of my father, and informed me that my parents, and brothers and sisters were all recently well, which was very satisfying to me."
