DescriptionSUTTON HALL is shown at wharf No 8 Woolloomooloo. This photograph captures the vessel conducting commercial trade in Sydney after it was loaned to France during 1916 to 1917 for war services.HistorySUTTON HALL was a twin screw British cargo ship of 4460 ton built by Swan Hunter WR at Wallsend in 1905. It was owned by the Ellerman Line Ltd of Liverpool and during World War I was loaned to France between 1916 and 1917. SUTTON HALL was scrapped in the early 1930s.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
