DescriptionMANCHESTER CITY is shown at 19 Jones Bay wharf, Prymont. This wharf was one of four built between 1911 and 1919 to cater for the high number of international ships that brought commercial cargo in to Sydney Harbour. MACHESTER CITY was used for carrying cargo between Britain and Australia during the first half of the 20th century.HistoryMANCHESTER CITY was a steamship of 5833 ton used for carrying cargo. Built in 1898 by Dixon Raylton at Middlesborough it was chartered under the Housten Line from 1908. MANCHESTER CITY was scrapped in 1929.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
