DescriptionSS CLAN MACNAUGHTON was photographed off Cremorne Point on Monday 25 June 1923. Other ships are moving towards the Point Beacon in the corner of the picture. CLAN MACNAUGHTON operated under the Clan Line and was involved in carrying cargo on the trade routes between Australia and Britain.HistoryCLAN MACNAUGHTON was a British steamship of 6088 tons built in 1921 by Ayrshire Dockyard Co Ltd. It was owned by the Clan Line Steamers Ltd, London. It was sunk by a German submarine on 1 August 1942 while carrying bales of cotton on the trade route between Alexandria to Freetown and Trinidad to New York. SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
