DescriptionRMS ORMUZ was photographed at the PO Buoy in Sydney Harbour on Saturday afternoon, 1 March 1924. At the time it was operating as a passenger liner for the Orient Line.HistoryORMUZ was a 14167 ton passenger and cargo vessel origianlly launched as ZEPPELIN, it could accomodate 200 cabin, 350 tourist-class and 600 third-class passengers. It was built in 1915 by Bremer Vulkan at Vegesak and owned by North German Line at Breman. In 1919 it was taken over by the British following World War I and renamed ORMUZ it operated for the Orient LIne. In 1927 it was purchased by the North German Line and renamed DRESDEN. In 1934 the vessel wrecked on Klepp Bokn Island, Norway.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
