DescriptionSS KAZEMBE is anchored off Athol Bight, Sydney on Sunday 28 October 1923. This photograph was captured from a ferry. KAZEMBE was operating for the Ellerman & Bucknall Line at the time.HistorySS KAZEMBE was a British cargo ship of 4,658 tons built in 1907 by Alexander, Stephen & Sons at Linthouse for the Bucknall Steamship Line. Between 1915 and 1918 it served in the navy during World War I and in 1932 sold to Smith and Houston for 1,875 pounds and then scrapped in Glasgow.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
