DescriptionThis airmail envelope features an image of the aircraft FLOYD BENNETT and the wording "Historic Flight to the South Pole, Antarctica 70 years ago, 28th/29th November 1929 by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd". It was sent to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, the American scientific research station in Antarctica. Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr was a pioneering American aviator who undertook the first flight to the South Pole and back in 1929.SignificanceThis collection is significant in representing a broad range of Antarctic philately interests (the study of stamps and postal history). It covers most of the countries who have bases in the white continent and are signatories to the Antarctic Treaty, including all of the Australian bases.
