DescriptionCARTHAGE was photographed on her maiden voyage to Australia, berthing at No 4 Circular Quay West from Pyrmont on Thursday 6 June 1932. This image was captured at 12.40pm from No 7a wharf, West Circular Quay, Sydney.HistorySS CARTHAGE was originally called CANTON and built in 1931 as a passenger and cargo vessel. The 14,304 ton ship was constructed by Alexander, Stephen & Sons at Linthouse Glasgow. It was owned by the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company and used on the trade route between London, Bombay and China. In 1943 it was requisitioned as a troopship during World War II and was returned to commercial service in 1947. Mitsui Bussan Kaisha at Osaka purchased the vessel in 1961 and renamed it CARTHAGE MARU. It was scrapped later in that year.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
