DescriptionCargo ship GLENMOOR was photographed at No 1 Athol Bight on Sunday 30 April 1933.This image was captured from the 10.30am ferry travelling between Circular Quay and Taronga Park, Sydney.HistoryGLENMOOR was a 4,398 ton British cargo ship built by William Doxford & Sons at Pallion, Sunderland and owned by Walter Runciman & Co Ltd, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Launched on the 8th of March 1928 it was destroyed on 27th November 1940 after it was torpedoed by a German submarine while travelling between Cardiff and Alexandria. 31 of the 33 crew members were lost.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
