DescriptionUnframed etching by Bathurst Island artist Nina (Ludwina) Puruntatameri, 2006. Geometric abstract linear design arranged in quadrants. The design is rendered in yellow ochres and white. A black circular motif is located at the centre of the work. Edition number 39/50. Designs like this are used for body painting during Tiwi ceremonies.
This work, demonstrative of the strong geometric abstractions typical of contemporary Tiwi art, draws inspiration from the art of body painting that has been practiced by the Tiwi for thousands of years. This patterning, characterised by geometric structures of lines and dots are a significant element in much of the work produced by Tiwi artists.SignificanceThis work, demonstrative of the strong geometric abstractions typical of contemporary Tiwi art, draws inspiration from the art of body painting that has been practiced by the Tiwi for thousands of years.
