DescriptionThis short-sleeved collared shirt was made in Hawaii by Surf Line in the 1960s. The cotton fabric features a montage image of a surfer riding red waves, with the text 'Hawaii / Surf Line'.HistoryCreated by a surfing family back in 1964, Surf Line entered the competive surf market in Makaha Beach on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, with their surf shorts, known as 'Jams'. The brightly coloured fabric used for the Jams created a craze for big patterns and bold colours that would eventually become inextricably linked with surf culture and fashion.SignificanceThis is a rare example of a 1960s surfer print cotton shirt from the American surfwear company Surf Line.
