HistoryRank insignia difficult to work out, the coat and cap are of an officer, midshipmen traditionally wore three buttons on their cuffs as insignia, as did warrant officers from 1829 to 1856. The man in the portrait is to old to be a midshipman, therefore most likely a senior non-commissioned officer.
