DescriptionThis technical drawing by Frank Norton shows Pyrmont as a hub of the commercial shipping industry congested with warehouses and vessels.HistoryEuropean settlers established Darling Harbour as a market wharf in the early nineteenth century. Not officially named Darling Harbour until 1826 (after Governor Ralph Darling), the area, including Pyrmont, developed into a major industrial facility. By the 1970s, however, the shipping industry had declined and Darling Harbour was full of derelict buildings and wharves. It underwent urban renewal and rejuvenation in the 1980s and is now a popular destination for Sydneysiders and tourists alike.SignificanceFrank Norton has captured a moment of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and during a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia.
