DescriptionThis printed paper program was given out at the Manly Pacific surf contest, held on September 29, 1968. The program cover features an image of Richard Harvey surfing in Newcastle with the text 'Wind'n Sea'. Together with a list of events and contestants, the program also includes photographs of Dave Trelor, Kev Parkinson, Butch Cooney, and Bruce Channon.HistoryCompetitive surfing dates to pre-nineteenth century Hawaii, where it was often used as a system of conflict resolution. Skills were tested in contests where wealth, pride and relationships were at stake. Modern day surf competitions date from the late 1920s, though were not a common occurrence until the 1950s and 1960s.SignificanceThe contest program shows the origins of contest club surfing and includes names such as Bruce Channon, Ted Spencer, Peter Drouyn and Kevin Brennan who became influential figures in Australian surfing.
