DescriptionThis unofficial patch features a desert-toned Australian flag and was worn by some Australian servicemen in the Middle East Area of Operations. It is designed to blend in with the desert-coloured camouflage of the Australian Defence Force uniform, and includes the word Australia written in Arabic for locals to identify. HistoryThe Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO) incorporates Operation SLIPPER and Operation CATALYST which have been undertaken since 2005 as part of a multi-national campaign. Operation SLIPPER's main mission is to demonstrate Australia's commitment to the international coalition against terrorism. Operation CATALYST is the Australian Defence Force's contribution to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iraq. Both of these are presently still in operation in the Middle East (2008).
