DescriptionThis two piece swimsuit has a tiered top with narrow shoulder straps buttoned at the back, and matching lined bikini briefs. Made by the popular Australian brand Watersun in the early 1960s, the sunray pleated camisole-style top is open at the back and is fastened with two metal press studs. Using a frothy Terelyne fabric of sea green with white spots, the swimsuit was quick drying and very comfortable.HistoryIn the 1950s and early 1960s swimsuits and sunsuits were often shaped with stiff paneling and built-in supports to create a curvaceous, ultra-feminine silhouette that emphasised the bust, waistline and hips.
As the 1960s progressed swimsuits became less structured, and designs became more focused on comfort. Necklines went up and straps became thicker. This change was influenced by the new synthetics that were stretchier and offered greater freedom to the wearer.
From the 1950s there had been a shift away from using natural fibres, such as wool and cotton, to synthetics. Terelyne was popular in the 1960s as it was quick drying and could be used in a number of different applications.SignificanceThis swimsuit is an early example of women's beachwear fashions produced by Watersun in Australia in the 1960s.
