DescriptionThis 1930s set of pale blue silk beach pyjamas is decorated with Art Deco and Japanese inspired screen printed motifs. The bolero jacket, which flares out at the sleeves, and the wide leg pants, are both fully lined in cream silk. Silk, crepe de chine or satin 'beach pyjamas' were created by French designer Coco Chanel in the 1920s. Worn for sophisticated parties or as resortwear in the 1930s they represented freedom and style for the emancipated woman. HistoryBeach pyjamas were first introduced by French designer Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel in the 1920s, and were inspired by the evocative colours used by the navy and the wide-leg cut of sailor pants. By the end of the decade the fashion for wearing silk kimonos, beach pajamas and beach coats had been established. This elegant trend continued into the 1930s.SignificanceThis pyjama set is a rare example of high 1930s beach fashions, and reflects contemporary developments in both Australian and international resortwear.
