DescriptionA wooden 1980s Australian Admirals Cup yacht racing challenge campaign office sign. The sign is painted white with green pennant flag with a yellow kangaroo at the centre. The sign reads: "Ocean Racing Club of Australia 1981 ADMIRALS CUP DEFENCE CAMPAIN OFFICE 14 MATONG GORDON NSW 2072".HistoryThe Admirals Cup began in 1957 as a race between Great Britain and the United States established by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) of Great Britain. The event grew to include other countries with Australia fielding its first three yacht team in 1965. The yachts involved were Sydney Hobart winner, FREYA, Ron Swanson’s CAMILLE and Gordon Ingate’s CAPRICE OF HUON. Although they were out performed that year they returned in 1967 to win the series in a shock upset. SignificanceThe Admirals Cup yacht race, the “unofficial world championship of offshore racing”, was a significant event on the yacht racing calendar and Australia has contested the event since 1967 with the honour of winning the event three times.
