A small plaque at the bottom centre of the frame is inscribed with "The Last Regatta HMAS HOBART DDG39 rides at anchor on the Derwent".
This painting (and its limited edition print) was painted by Wilson as the ship left Hobart for the last time in 1999. The reverse has been signed by all the officers.
HMAS HOBART had sailed more than one million nautical miles, had served in Vietnam three times, been the first ship to Darwin to help with Cyclone Tracy and had been awarded the Gloucester Cup eight times .HistoryFollowing commissioning HOBART spent eight months in American waters on trials and exercises, subsequently
sailing for Australia on 3rd August 1966. After visiting Pearl Harbour and Suva, HOBART arrived at Hobart on 1st September 1966.
From April 1967 until September 1967 HOBART served as a unit of the Seventh Fleet operating off the coast of
Vietnam. She completed further tours of duty in Vietnamese waters from April 1968 until September 1968
and April 1970 until September 1970. HOBART was awarded a US Navy Unit Commendation for her 1967 service with the Seventh Fleet.
In May 2000 HMAS HOBART was decommissioned following 34 years of service. She was later sunk as dive wreck on the South Australian coast, in Yankalilla Bay, on the Southern Fleurieu Penninsula.SignificanceHMAS Hobart (II) was a Charles F Adams class destroyer which saw 35 years’ service in the Royal Australian Navy, having been commissioned in 1965. The ship completed three tours of duty (1967, 1968, and 1970) with USN forces during the Vietnam War serving under the US Seventh Fleet. Several of the ship's company were killed.
