DescriptionThis silk program was produced for the 75th Anniversary Regatta in 1863 held on Sydney Harbour to mark the founding of the colony of New South Wales on 26 January 1788. It details fourteen rowing and sailing races open to a variety of vessels crewed by youths, gentlemen, amateurs and licensed watermen.HistoryThe Anniversary Regatta was first held in 1837 after a group of citizens from Sydney decided to celebrate the landing of the First Fleet on 26 January 1788. The regatta consisted of rowing and sailing races and always had a flagship, either a navy, merchant ship or later a passenger liner. This social and sporting event was very popular with the public who would take picnic refreshments to the foreshore and attend balls and recitals in the evening.SignificanceThis program is representative of rowing in Australia in the 19th century. Regattas provided the community with both a social and sporting event.
