DescriptionA painting by Gary Winter of Japanese tuna fleet ships tied at port. One of the ships is the SHOUN MARU NO SI. HistoryTuna fleets from Japan and other countries were once a regular feature off Australia's coasts, especially in its cool southern waters. They would dock at Hobart to refuel and restock. Catch sizes remain a point of contention between Australia, Japan and other nations in attempts to maintain a sustainable industry. In the 1990's due to overfishing a ban was enforced on the Japanese tuna fleet in Australian ports. SignificanceThis painting is representitive Australian fisheries and the contentions which have arisen with other countries over sustainable fishing of species such as tuna.
