DescriptionThis commemorative plate was produced in 1999 by the HMAS VOYAGER Survivor Association to mark the 35th anniversary of the loss of the Daring class destroyer HMAS VOYAGER in collision with the aircraft carrier HMAS MELBOURNE on the night of 10 February 1964.HistoryCommissioned in 1957, HMAS VOYAGER was the first ship Daring class destroyer to enter Australian service, and the first all-welded ship to be built in Australia. During its career, VOYAGER was deployed to the Far East Strategic Reserve (FESR) on six occasions, and later represented Australia in various exercises and ceremonial events.
During the night of 10 February 1964, HMA Ships VOYAGER and MELBOURNE collided off Jervis Bay, NSW, when the destroyer passed in front of the carrier during post-refit sea trials. VOYAGER sank with the loss of 82 men.
HMAS VOYAGER was designed by the British Admiralty. Allocated ship number 188, it was laid down on 10 October 1949, launched on 1 March 1952, and completed on 10 February 1957.
SignificanceThis plate commemorates a disastrous episode in the peacetime history of the Royal Australian Navy.
