DescriptionThis photograph captures several of BRITANNIA's competitors, sailing in a close race on Sydney Harbour. Among them are H.C PRESS, MISSISSIPPI, KISMET and MASCOTTE. Behind them are several vessels of onlookers including one of the three steam vessels enabling spectators to watch the race.History18ft. skiff racing was an entertaining sport for spectators. Its origins are attributed to Mark Foy and a group of businessmen who founded the Sydney Flying Yacht Squadron, reportedly established on 19 October 1891. BRITANNIA and its skipper Georgie Robinson were prominent figures in 18ft. skiff racing between the two world wars.
