HistoryIron-hulled clipper ship CIMBA was built by Hood of Aberdeen in 1878 for Alexander Nicol & Co. Between 1878 and 1898 CIMBA sailed between Australia and London, servicing the Australian wool trade. CIMBA was sold to Norwegian owners in 1906, primarily for lumber transportation. In July 1915 CIMBA became stranded in the fog near Pointe Des Monts, Quebec, and was lost.SignificanceThe Hall photographic collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour from the 1890s to the 1930s. The collection documents the lively sailing scene in Sydney during this period and features images of vessels ranging from large racing and cruising yachts to the great array of skiffs and the emerging technologies of motorboats. Images of many iconic vessels, such as CIMBA, are also included in this visual record.
